This 7-day Wildebeest Migration Safari in the Western Corridor provides an exceptional opportunity to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary events—the annual migration of over 1.5 million wildebeest, accompanied by zebras and gazelles, as they traverse the Serengeti in search of greener pastures. The itinerary is structured to follow the migration route through the Seronera region (Central Serengeti) and the Western Corridor (Western Serengeti), where the famous Grumeti River crossings take place between May and July.
This safari also includes a visit to the Ngorongoro Crater, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its high density of predators and unique ecosystem. The program is designed to maximize wildlife viewing and minimize unnecessary travel, concluding with a scenic flight back to Arusha.
The movement of the migration is influenced by seasonal rainfall, food availability, and predator activity. While the timing of river crossings cannot be guaranteed, this itinerary is planned to give guests the best possible chance to witness this breathtaking phenomenon.
After breakfast, depart from Arusha and drive to Tarangire National Park. This park is renowned for its large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. The Tarangire River is a vital water source, attracting a wide variety of animals, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, and over 500 bird species. Enjoy a full-day game drive before heading to the lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After breakfast, drive towards the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrive at the lodge in time for lunch, then descend over 600 meters into the Ngorongoro Crater, home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. The crater supports a diverse ecosystem with large populations of wildebeest, zebras, buffalo, hippos, elephants, and a dense predator population, including lions, cheetahs, and leopards. Visit Lake Magadi, a shallow alkaline lake that attracts flamingos and other water birds.
After breakfast, drive to Serengeti National Park, entering the vast open plains teeming with wildlife. The Seronera area is a major hub for resident and migratory animals, offering year-round game viewing. This region is rich in predators, including large lion prides, elusive leopards, and fast-moving cheetahs. Arrive at the lodge in time for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive.
(Optional: Experience a Hot Air Balloon Safari over the Serengeti at sunrise, available at an additional cost.)
Spend the day exploring the Seronera region, a key area for the wildebeest migration from April to June. Large herds of zebras and wildebeest move across the plains, attracting predators such as hyenas and lions. Explore various landscapes, from short-grass plains to acacia woodlands, while observing a wide range of wildlife.
After breakfast, travel west towards the Serengeti’s Western Corridor, where the migration typically arrives between May and July. The Grumeti and Mbalageti Rivers are major obstacles for migrating herds, creating dramatic river crossings where large crocodiles lie in wait. This area also supports resident wildlife, including giraffes, elephants, and topi antelopes. Arrive at the lodge for lunch, followed by an afternoon game drive.
Spend the day exploring the Western Corridor, following the migration herds as they gather near the Grumeti River. Watch as thousands of wildebeest attempt to cross the crocodile-infested waters, a heart-pounding spectacle that draws photographers and wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. Other notable wildlife includes elephants, buffalos, and numerous bird species.
After breakfast, enjoy a morning game drive en route to the Grumeti airstrip. Board a scheduled flight back to Arusha, where you will be transferred to a hotel for lunch, marking the end of your safari experience.
