Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

  • Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,100m (1,400m to 2,500m)

What to Expect: Start the trek after registration at Momella Gate. Walk through lush rainforest trails with chances to see wildlife such as giraffes, colobus monkeys, and buffalo. Enjoy views of waterfalls, open grasslands, and the park’s unique flora and fauna.

Dinner and overnight stay at Miriakamba Hut.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

  • Distance: 8 km (5 miles)
  • Hiking Time: 3–5 hours
  • Elevation Gain: 1,050m (2,500m to 3,550m)

What to Expect: Trek through thinning forest and enter the moorland zone with open views of Mount Meru’s crater and Ash Cone. Stop at Elephant Ridge for breathtaking panoramas. Optional short acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) in the afternoon. Overnight stay at Saddle Hut.

Day 3: Summit Attempt and Descent to Momella Gate

  • Distance: 18 km (11 miles) total (4 km ascent, 14 km descent)
  • Hiking Time: 10–12 hours (4–6 hours ascent, 6 hours descent)
  • Elevation Gain/Loss: +1,016m (3,550m to 4,566m) / -2,166m (4,566m to 1,400m)

What to Expect: Midnight start for the summit. Trek via Rhino Point (3,800m) and Cobra Point (4,350m). Steep, rocky terrain with exposed ridges leading to Socialist Peak (4,566m). Enjoy sunrise with views of Kilimanjaro and the Rift Valley. Descend back to Saddle Hut for breakfast, then continue down to Momella Gate through lush forests. Certificates of achievement are awarded at the gate.

  • Transport from the hotel in Arusha to the mountain and back to the Hotel.

  • Accommodation in a lodge in Arusha or Moshi at a Hotel for 2 nights (before & after the climb), including breakfast and taxes

  • Medical equipment which can be rented well in advance for the following costs: $250/group for hyperbaric chamber, $210/group for an emergency oxygen cylinder and $140/group for a stretcher. Please note these prices include a porter to carry the equipment.
  • Portable toilets: If you are concerned about using public toilets, a portable toilet is available for an extra $110/person or $180/group. This service must be confirmed at the time of booking.
