When planning a trip to Tanzania, it’s important to be aware of the visa requirements and processes to ensure a smooth entry into the country. Whether you’re traveling for tourism, business, or other purposes, here’s a general overview of what you need to know about obtaining a visa for Tanzania.

Types of Visas

Tanzania offers several types of visas depending on the purpose of your visit:

  1. Tourist Visa: For those visiting Tanzania for leisure, tourism, or holiday purposes.
  2. Business Visa: For individuals traveling to Tanzania for business-related activities such as meetings, conferences, or short-term work assignments.
  3. Transit Visa: For travelers passing through Tanzania to another destination and staying in the country for no more than 7 days.
  4. Student Visa: For those intending to study in Tanzania.
  5. Volunteer Visa: For individuals planning to volunteer with an organization in Tanzania.

Visa Application Process

Visas can be obtained either before your trip or upon arrival in Tanzania. Here are the general steps to apply:

  1. Online Application: The Tanzania eVisa system allows you to apply online. You can complete the application, upload necessary documents, and pay the visa fee online. The eVisa is typically processed within a few business days.
  2. Visa on Arrival: Alternatively, you can obtain a visa upon arrival at major entry points such as airports and border crossings. However, applying in advance is recommended to avoid delays.
  3. Documents Required: You will generally need a valid passport (with at least six months of validity), a completed visa application form, a passport-sized photograph, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay.

Fees

The visa fees are as follows:

  • American Citizens: $100 USD
  • Citizens of Other Countries: $50 USD

Payment can be made online for eVisas or at the point of entry for visas on arrival.

Duration of Stay

Tourist and business visas typically allow a stay of up to 90 days, either as a single-entry or multiple-entry visa depending on the type issued.

Extensions

If you wish to extend your stay, you can apply for a visa extension at the Tanzania Immigration Department offices in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, or Arusha. Extensions are granted at the discretion of the immigration authorities.

Additional Considerations

  1. Yellow Fever Vaccination: Depending on your country of origin, a yellow fever vaccination certificate may be required for entry.
  2. Travel Insurance: While not mandatory, it’s advisable to have travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and other unexpected events.
